Jane the Virgin by no means lacks sauciness, though, but it also shows that sex isn’t the only important thing in a relationship.

There are obvious nods to Catholicism throughout the show and Jane essentially becomes a virgin mother through Immaculate Conception. Heeding her abuela Alba’s warning - that virginity is a delicate flower that can never be rectified once tampered with - Jane decides to save herself for marriage. Not many shows tackle faith the way Jane the Virgin does. Rather, it showed us that Latinx people are just like everyone else. The lead characters are women of color, though no undue attention is brought to this. The bilingual show seamlessly flits between languages with subtitles provided for those unfamiliar with Spanish. Jane, played by Gina Rodriguez, is Venezuelan-American and has lived in Miami all her life with her mother, Xo, and Spanish-speaking abuela (grandmother), Alba. The real takeaways were so much more: navigating the complexity of living, multiculturalism, religion, and love from an award-winning, predominantly Latinx cast.Īs the show prepares to come to an end (but, thankfully, you can stream it for your re-watching pleasure on Netflix), here's a look back at what this groundbreaking show has taught us over five wonderful seasons. These outlandish twists, however, were merely a side dish. Purposely over-the-top, Jane the Virgin has all the trappings of great primetime TV: likable characters, romance, infallible villains, mystery, evil twins, more romance and even resurrections from the dead. Would she pick Michael, the cop, or wealthy suitor Rafael? Was Mateo, her son, switched at birth? Who’s the narrator? Why lavender?

Superfans already know this, of course, because you’ve cried with laughter and pain during the logic-defying plots and cliffhangers. For any Jane the Virgin virgins out there, the astoundingly funny series tells the story of Jane Gloriana Villanueva, a young woman who was accidentally artificially inseminated with the sperm of her former boss and current partner.
